As we enter another season of learning and scholarship, this issue reflects the vibrant academic life of ISJS. Our Summer School is underway, bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds for an immersive exploration of Jain philosophy, literature, and practice. Preparations are also in full swing for our upcoming Winter Program, while applications remain open for the Bhagwan Mahavira Prakrit Fellowship and submissions continue for the Bhagwan Kunthunath ISJS Awards. Through these initiatives, ISJS remains committed to fostering rigorous scholarship, meaningful dialogue, and a deeper appreciation of the rich intellectual and living traditions of Jainism across the world.

ISJS ANNOUNCES 9TH WINTER PROGRAM ON JAINISM

ISJS invites applications for its 10-day Online Winter Program on Jain philosophy, ethics, and way of life. Designed for students, researchers, faculty members, teachers, professionals, and anyone with an interest in Jainism, the program features lectures by distinguished scholars, interactive discussions, and conversations with Jain practitioners. Classes will be held online in English from 28 December 2026 to 06 January 2027. We welcome participants from India and around the world to join this enriching academic experience.

LAST CALL: JOIN 7TH BHAGWAN MAHAVIRA PRAKRIT FELLOWSHIP

Applications for the 7th Bhagwan Mahavira Prakrit Fellowship close on 31 July 2026. This prestigious nine-month residential programme, hosted at Abhay Prabhavana, Pune, runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 May 2027 and offers intensive training in Prakrit language alongside the study of Jain intellectual traditions. Prospective scholars and researchers interested in pursuing Prakrit are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline.

Scholars are reminded that submissions are still open for the Bhagwan Kunthunath ISJS Awards 2025-2026. Books and research papers published between April 2025 and March 2026 are eligible for consideration. If you or your colleagues have published work in Jain studies during this period, we encourage you to submit it for review and recognition.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA AT ABHAY PRABHAVANA

Abhay Prabhavana marked the International Day of Yoga with an engaging wellness program attended by all staff members. ISJS Research Associate Pragya Jain delivered a talk on the history, etymology, and contemporary relevance of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, followed by a guided meditation session. As part of the celebration, participants reflected on their personal well-being by writing daily wellness commitments on sticky notes and displaying them on a shared commitment board, reinforcing the importance of mindful living in everyday life.

ISJS SUMMER SCHOOL UNDERWAY AT NAVALVEERAYATAN

The ISJS Summer School, underway since 18 June at Navalveerayatan, Pune, has brought together participants from around the world for an immersive study of Jain philosophy and religion. Through engaging lectures, lively discussions, and visits to institutions such as Abhay Prabhavana, participants are gaining both a textual and a lived understanding of the Jain tradition.

OPPORTUNITY FOR PRAKRIT SCHOLARS

Applications are invited from Prakrit scholars to participate in a Prakrit-to-English translation project in Pune aimed at making the ancient Indian language accessible to a wider international readership. The project offers a valuable opportunity for scholars with proficiency in Prakrit and an interest in translation to contribute to the dissemination of Jain knowledge. ISJS CONGRATULATES LEONARDO ON COMPLETING HIS PHD

ISJS warmly congratulates Leonardo, an ISJS alumnus (2023-24), on the successful completion of his PhD at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, Brazil. His dissertation, To Cross the Ford: Interactions and Relationships between Renunciants and Laypeople in the Jain Tradition, is the first doctoral thesis in Brazil devoted exclusively to the Jain tradition.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN JAIN STUDIES

The Department of Asian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has announced a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Jain Studies for early-career scholars. Beginning in October 2026, the fellowship offers an excellent opportunity to pursue independent research, particularly in Jain philosophy, within one of the world's leading centres for Jain Studies. Applications are open until 31 July 2026.

UCLA HIGHLIGHTS ISJS APPOINTMENT OF ALUMNA

The Department of Indo-European Studies at UCLA has featured its alumna Dr. Anahita Hoose in a recent news announcement recognizing her appointment as Research Fellow at ISJS. The feature acknowledges her transition from doctoral studies and lectureship at UCLA to a research position, highlighting her academic achievements and continued contributions to linguistics and Jain Studies. ISJS is delighted that Anahita's appointment has received recognition from her alma mater and looks forward to her ongoing contributions to the Institute's research and academic programs.
