NATIONAL SEMINAR HIGHLIGHTS JAIN COMMUNITY’S CONTRIBUTIONS

Teaching for Peace

On April 23, 2026, the National Commission for Minorities convened a National Seminar on “Contribution of the Jain Community to the Indian Economy, Education and Philanthropy” at Indore, Madhya Pradesh, with Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya serving as Knowledge Partner. The event brought together scholars, academicians, policymakers, and community leaders to reflect on the multifaceted role of the Jain community in nation building.

The inaugural session featured distinguished voices from academia, government, and the Jain community, including addresses by Smt. Alka Upadhyaya (Secretary, NCM), Dr. Rakesh Singhai (Vice Chancellor, DAVV), Shri Shantilal Mutha, Shri Kamlesh Sojatia, and other eminent leaders. A short film on Jainism set the tone, followed by keynote and guest addresses from senior officials and dignitaries. Speakers emphasized the community’s enduring contributions to ethical business, value based education, and philanthropy.

Two technical sessions enriched the seminar: “Contribution of the Jain Community to the Indian Economy, Education and Philanthropy” and “Jainism and Indian Knowledge System.” During the latter, Dr. Navin Srivastav, Associate Director, ISJS, presented a paper on Jain contributions to education, highlighting the three pillars of Jain prosperity – Education, Enterprise, and Ethics – and the integration of core principles such as Ahimsa, Anekantavada, and Aparigraha into educational thought. His presentation underscored the role of Jain philanthropy in democratizing education and sustaining intellectual traditions.

The valedictory session consolidated key outcomes, reaffirming the Jain community’s vital role in shaping India’s economic, educational, and philanthropic landscape. An interactive discussion with policymakers and participants further explored strategies for collaboration and future initiatives.

Overall, the seminar provided a valuable platform for dialogue, deepening appreciation of how Jain values continue to inspire ethical education, economic thought, and social responsibility in contemporary India.
