Dr. Shugan C Jain
Dr. Jain, B.E. (DU), M.S. (NYU USA), MA & PhD in Jainology (JVBI) has worked as Management and Information Technology consultant and entrepreneur in the USA, The Netherlands and India (1962-2001). He has also been involved in rehabilitating many Jain educational institutions in India.
He founded International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS’ in 2005 and introduced academic studies of Jainism and Prakrit in global universities. Currently the President of ISJS, Dr. Jain has delivered a number of lecture on Nonviolence and Jain values in different institutions of India and abroad. He published fifty papers and seven books on different aspects of Jain philosophy, ethics, history and culture, community, and application to resolve today's global issues.
Mr. Anubhav Jain
Mr. Jain is a scholar, educator, speaker, social entrepreneur and poet. He is the Founder & Chief Education Officer of The Arham Body of Divinity & Excellence (The Abode School of Dreams) and Secretary, Syat Education Society.
An IIM Indore MBA (Strategy & Finance) and Chartered Accountant, he has delivered Jain philosophy discourses across India and internationally since 2009. He also conceptualised and edited Bal Samaysar, a concise bilingual version of Samaysar for children. His recognitions include the Maitree Scholar Award and Best Mangalarthi Award.
Abstract
This talk will discuss the relationship between matter and the immaterial soul, with special reference to the Pañcāstikāya Saṅgraha. The text shows that karma, the thing binding the soul, is not myth or metaphor but literal matter and that the switch controlling it is the one instrument everyone already owns, their own thought (bhāva) as emotion is the interface where an immaterial soul touches material karma. The talk will connect this ancient insight to modern research on the capacity for immaterial thought or emotion to influence material biology.
