ISJS has successfully concluded its 3-Week Summer School, with participants Emma Cohler from USA, Ryushin Sudo from Japan and Sauradeep Majumdar from India, completing the intensive program on July 8, 2026. During their time at ISJS, the scholars attended lectures on Jain philosophy, ethics, history, and culture, visited Jain temples in and around Pune, met with Jain householders and ascetics to gain first-hand insights into contemporary Jain life, and engaged in lively philosophical discussions that deepened their understanding of the tradition.
The 5 Week Summer School now enters its final phase. Participants have embarked on a three day educational visit to Kumbhoj Bahubali and other important Jain pilgrimage sites in the region, where they explored the historical, archaeological, and religious significance of these sacred places.
During the visit, they also engaged in meaningful interactions with Jain ascetics and Bhattarakas, deepening their understanding of living Jain traditions. Following the field visit, they will devote the remainder of the program to writing their research papers at Navalveerayatan, integrating classroom learning with their field experiences and interactions. The program will conclude with the presentation and submission of these papers, marking the culmination of another successful ISJS Summer School.
"This ISSJS program greatly broadened my understanding of Jaina theory, practice, ethics, archaeology, and ritual through primary source study and philosophical inquiry. Temple visits, a museum tour, a visit to a Jain householder's home, and discussions with participants enriched the experience. I am sincerely grateful to ISJS for this invaluable opportunity."
