LECTURE DELIVERED ON GOMMATESHWAR BAHUBALI BY PROF. MNP
TIWARI
On January 10, 2026, the International School for Jain Studies (ISJS) successfully conducted the 26th
lecture in its ongoing online series on Jainology.
The session, titled "Gommatesvara Bahubali: Personification of Jain Principles and Message", was delivered
by Prof. Maruti Nandan Prasad Tiwari, a distinguished scholar of Indian art and iconography. The lecture was
chaired by Prof. Prasad Joshi, Vice Chancellor (A), Deccan College Postgraduate and Research Institute,
Deemed to be University, Pune.
With participation from over 50 attendees across India and abroad, the talk offered a profound exploration
of Bahubali's extraordinary veneration in Jainism. Prof. Tiwari examined how Bahubali's imagery assimilated
features traditionally associated with Tirthankaras, and how his unexpected elevation in worship and art
invites deeper scholarly inquiry into the cultural and theological dimensions of Jain tradition.
The lecture enriched the series by shedding light on the intersection of devotion, iconography, and
philosophical symbolism, reaffirming ISJS's commitment to advancing global understanding of Jain studies.
