HONOURING THE LIFE AND WORK OF SHRI NEMUBHAI CHANDARIA
OBE
The International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS’ honours the passing of Shri Nemubhai Chandaria OBE
(1939-2025), a distinguished leader whose lifelong dedication to Jain values and institutional development
has left an indelible mark on the global Jain community.
As the founding trustee of the Institute of Jainology (IoJ) in the United Kingdom, Shri Chandaria played a pivotal
role in advancing Jain philosophy, heritage, and scholarship on international platforms. His visionary leadership
was instrumental in securing formal recognition of Jainism by the British government, initiating the digitisation
of thousands of Jain manuscripts, and curating landmark exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the
British Library. His efforts fostered enduring collaborations with UNESCO, the UK Parliament, and leading academic
institutions, thereby elevating Jain studies within global interreligious and cultural discourse.
Shri Chandaria’s legacy continues through the institutions he nurtured, the manuscripts he helped preserve, and
the communities he inspired. His passing is a profound loss to the field of Jain studies and to all who strive for
a more compassionate and inclusive world.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and the wider Jain academic community. May his soul
attain liberation (mokṣha) and eternal peace.
