LECTURE DELIVERED: PLURAL PATHS TO PURIFICATION BY
PROF. CHRISTOPHER KEY CHAPPLE
On November 5, 2025, ISJS hosted the 24th lecture in its online series on Jainology. The
session, titled Plural Paths to Purification, was delivered by Prof. Christopher Key Chapple,
Doshi Distinguished Professor of Indic and Comparative Theology at Loyola Marymount University, Los
Angeles (USA).
Prof. Chapple explored diverse pathways to spiritual refinement in Jain philosophy, drawing from classical
texts such as Yogabindu and Jnanarnava/Yogashastra. He highlighted how practices like puja,
mantra, visualization, and meditation help dissolve karmic afflictions-hatred, greed, delusion, and
egotism-across physical, mental, and emotional dimensions.
The session was chaired by Dr. Shugan C. Jain, President of ISJS, who contextualized the lecture
within ISJS's broader academic initiatives.
The lecture offered rich insights into Jain yoga and purification practices, reinforcing ISJS's commitment
to global academic exchange in Jain studies.
