Mahavira's timeless message of ahimsa, introspection, and spiritual discipline continues to inspire
across cultures. Among the many Jain contributors to India's intellectual heritage, Banarasidas (1586-1643 CE)
stands out for giving literary form to Jain values through Ardhakathanak-earliest known Hindi
autobiography-and other influential works that emphasize inner transformation over ritual formalism. Through
accessible language and vernacular expression, Banarasidas brought Jain philosophical insights into the public
sphere, fostering ethical reflection across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
At the International School for Jain Studies (ISJS), we remain committed to advancing these timeless Jain
philosophical insights through diverse programs, scholarly publications, and global collaborations. We are
pleased to announce several new opportunities for meaningful learning and engagement:

2026. Explore core teachings and daily practices through live lectures, cultural dialogue, and interactive

This issue features an English article by Dr. Navin Srivastav titled Banarasidas: An Overlooked Figure in
Indian History. It revisits the literary and historical significance of Ardhakathanak (1641 CE),
highlighting Banarasidas's pioneering role in Hindi autobiography and the enduring impact of Jain voices in
shaping India's cultural legacy.
Your engagement strengthens our shared commitment to a legacy of scholarship, ethical reflection, and enduring
clarity.
