It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sharayu Daftary, a distinguished industrialist,
philanthropist, and devoted Jain leader. Her contributions to Jainism, particularly through her leadership in the
Dakshin Bharat Jain Sabha and her editorial work for Jain Bodhak, have left an enduring legacy in the Jain
community.
Born in 1933 in Mumbai, Sharayu Daftary was a pioneering force in Indian industry, breaking barriers as the first
woman president of the Indian Merchants' Chamber (IMC) and the Automotive Components Manufacturers Association.
Despite her remarkable achievements in business, she remained deeply committed to Jain values, advocating for
nonviolence, ethical living, and gender equality within the Jain tradition. She was also awarded the Padma Shri in
2004 for her contributions to the Indian industry.
Her dedication to Jainism was recognized with the Jain Ratna Award, honoring her lifelong commitment to Jainism
and its values. Sharayu Daftary’s passing is a great loss to the Jain community and beyond. Her contributions will
continue to inspire generations of scholars, practitioners, and leaders.
