LECTURE CONCLUDED: JAINISM AND THE COMPOSITE, 'MESSY' HUMAN MIND BY DR. TILLO DETIGE
Dr. Tillo Detige delivered the 22nd online lecture on Jainism and the composite, ‘messy’ human mind on May
12, 2025.
The talk highlighted how Jains and scholars of Jainism encounter paradoxes in various fields. It explored the
solutions for the seeming ‘inconsistencies’ which are typically sought through attempts at reconciliation of
contradictory perspectives or arguments. The talk argued that coming to terms with the heterogeneity frees us from
self-imposed expectations of ‘consistency’ and our rationalistic drive for singularity.
The speaker, Dr. Tillo Detige, Alka Siddhartha Dalal Postdoctoral Fellow in Jainism at Rutgers University,
researches Digambara Jain ascetic lineages in early modern Western and Central India. His work appears in academic
publications, including Brill’s Encyclopedia of Jainism (2020). He earned his PhD (2024) from
Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s Center for Religious Studies, where he also taught Sanskrit and Hindi.
Dr. Manish Mehta, session chair, praised the lecture. A JAINA Director since 2004, he is a Life member of JSGD and
chairs the JAINA Diaspora Committee. He also serves as Vice-Chair of the Academic Liaison Committee and
contributes to the Long-Range Planning and Interfaith Committees. Founder of M-Tech International LLC, he is an
advisor and well-wisher of ISJS.
About 40 people attended the lecture, which led to an interesting discussion.
