In Jainism, fulfilling one's duty towards the nation is deeply tied to ethical principles. A nation thrives when
its citizens embody moral conduct (sanyam and charitra), practicing nonviolence in their actions and
interactions, ensuring social harmony and justice. Jain philosophy also emphasizes respect for fair governance,
responsibility, and civic duties. A just and stable nation is built upon ethical governance and law-abiding
citizens. Their daily prayer, called Meri Bhavana depicts the guiding values and wishes for a lay Jain to
follow. The last stanza says: bankar sab yugvira hridaya me, deshonnatti rat raha kare.
The canonical Jain text, Sthananga Sutra, mentions ten duties of a person, which include duties towards one’s
village, town, nation, republic, as well as religion. Even Jain metaphysical principles emphasize maintaining
balance and order in existence. So, Jain tradition views national duty as a holistic approach—integrating
personal virtue, democratic responsibility, social engagement, and spiritual integrity—to build a nation rooted
in ethical wisdom and lasting harmony.
The International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS’ plays a crucial role by promoting scholarly research,
education, and global awareness about Jain philosophy, ethics, and its applications, including duties toward the
nation.
When our iconic Summer School is around the corner, ISJS has already started to prepare for its 6th batch of
Bhagawan Mahavira Prakrit Fellowship program!
