The 20th International Summer School for Jain Studies has commenced at Navalveerayatan near Pune, offering
participants an immersive journey into the living traditions of Jainism through hands-on learning and cultural
engagement.
The 5-week program has drawn 11 participants from diverse countries such as the US, UK, Bangladesh, and India, all
engaging in the enriching educational experience.
After their induction on June 17, 2025, the participants have studied various topics discussing Placing Jainism in
the Indian philosophical scenario, Jain history and antiquity, Jain identity, Jain metaphysics, the concept of
soul, karma, Jain rituals, values, and food, theory of knowledge, the three jewels, and Sallekhana. Dr. Shugan C.
Jain, Dr. Shrinetra Pandey, Dr. Gauri Bedekar and Dr. Navin Srivastava were the faculty members for the above
lectures. A session on the "Use of AI in Jain Studies" was conducted by Prof. Siddhartha Dalal (Columbia
University, USA).
As part of their enriching journey, the participants visited Abhay Prabhavna, a renowned museum and knowledge
center. They witnessed a traditional Jain puja in both Digambar and Shwetambar temples and engaged in a meaningful
interaction with the family of Mr. Dipak Shah, gaining firsthand insights into the life of a Jain householder.
Their experience was further deepened through a Heritage Walk across Jain and other historical sites in Pune,
guided by Dr. Manjiri Bhalerao. The participants also witnessed the Chaturmas entry of the Sthanakavasi monks in
Pune.
After a few more lectures, the group will head to visit Jain pilgrim sites in Panvel, Kolhapur, and nearby places,
and meet some Jain ascetics.
