LECTURE ON PASSIONS IN JAINISM BY PROF. KANTI MARDIA CONCLUDED
Prof. Kanti Mardia delivered the 23rd lecture in the online lecture series on Overcoming the Inner Enemies:
Jain Wisdom on Destructive Emotions in a Modern World on June 12, 2025.
About 55 attendees joined the talk and appreciated Prof. Mardia’s efforts. The talk discussed the types of
passions and assessed that freedom from the passions is enlightenment itself, as it allows conquering the inner
enemies. Several scholars attended the lecture along with PP Nandighosh Surishwarji MS, who also offered his
remarks on the subject.
The speaker, Prof. Kanti Mardia, is a distinguished statistician and Jain scholar who is also honored with
an OBE for his academic and charitable work. The session chair, Prof. Christopher Chapple, is ISJS Advisor
and Doshi Professor of Indic and Comparative Theology at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, with a number
of publications in his name. Prof. Chapple also provided his insights on the topic.
