DECCAN COLLEGE: LECTURE CONCLUDED ON GYARASPUR'S MALADEVI JAIN TEMPLE BY MR. ANCHIT JAIN
The Department of AIHC and Archaeology at Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute (Deemed to be University), Pune, hosted the ninth lecture in the distinguished Prof. H. D. Sankalia Monthly Lecture Series on Jain Heritage, organized under the aegis of the Bhagwan Shitalnath Chair for Jain Archaeology.
The lecture titled Guru, Goddess and God at Gyaraspur's Maladevi Jain Temple took place on July 30, 2025, and was delivered by Mr. Anchit Jain, an independent researcher in Jain art and architecture.
Held online via Google Meet from 7:00 PM onwards, the session explored the concept of Guru, Goddess, and God within the iconographic and architectural landscape of the Maladevi Jain Temple at Gyaraspur, Madhya Pradesh. Once a vibrant center of Jain worship nestled in the hills, Maladevi Temple exemplifies an intriguing confluence of ascetic ideals, feminine divinity, and cosmic devotion.
The talk investigated the temple’s layered identities, carved imagery, and inscriptions, offering insight into how Jain philosophical values are embedded in stone. Attendees discussed the reflections on the temple’s religious transitions, its contested patronage, and the broader cultural backdrop of Central India’s sacred sites.
