Chaturmas / rainy season halt, marks a sacred period of introspection, spiritual discipline, and revival in
Jainism. Spanning four months during the monsoon season, it is a time when Jain ascetics (sadhus and sadhvis)
pause their wandering and settle at one place, allowing followers to have a deeper engagement with them through
discourses, rituals, and vows. This season is viewed as especially conducive to spiritual growth, with many
Jains observing seriously vows of non-violence, fasting, and heightened meditation.
Chaturmas not only strengthens the bond between ascetics and laypersons but also reinforces the core Jain
principles of self-restraint and inner purification. Utilizing this time, the International School for Jain
Studies “ISJS” organized a field trip for its Summer School participants to engage with ascetics from both major
Jain traditions — Digambar and Shwetambar. Participants also had the unique opportunity to meet the Bhattarakas/
administrator monks and learn how their seats serve as vital centers that support community activities and
spiritual practices.
Here is wishing all readers to enhance their knowledge an practice of Jain doctrine and code of conduct to
enhance their spiritual, physical and social wellness.
