ISJS congratulates our adviser and faculty member, Prof. Christopher
Key Chapple on being awarded an honorary Doctorate of Literature
(D.Litt.) from Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhāna Saṁsthāna, S-
VYASA Deemed-to-be University, Bengaluru, India on January 12,
2025.
Prof. Chapple holds the position of Doshi Professor of Indic and
Comparative Theology and is the Founding Director of the Master of
Arts in Yoga Studies at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles.
ISJS is honored to celebrate Professor Chapple's long-standing
collaboration with us as our esteemed academic advisor and key
faculty member on this occasion.
Prof. Chapple's passion for India began during his high school years in
New York, where he was particularly drawn to meditation and
nonviolence. He started studying Sanskrit at 17 and trained in classical
Yoga for twelve years. After earning his graduation in Comparative
Literature and Religious Studies and his post-graduation and doctoral
research in the History of Religions, Prof. Chapple has served in
various academic roles. His work revolves around understanding
human nature and ethical behavior as elucidated by Indic
philosophies. He has authored several books, including "Karma and
Creativity," "Nonviolence to Animals, Earth, and Self in Asian
Traditions," and "Living Landscapes: Meditations on the Elements in
Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain Yogas." He has also edited over 20 volumes on diverse topics related to Yoga, Jainism, and ecology, and published
over a hundred articles and chapters.
This prestigious recognition underscores Prof. Chapple’s outstanding
contributions to the field of yoga and his dedication to advancing
scholarly excellence.
