ISJS RESEARCH ASSOCIATE PRESENTS PAPER ON PRAKRIT IN
KALIDASA
Mr. Harshit Mishra, Research Associate at ISJS, presented a scholarly paper titled "The Use of
Prakrit Dialects in Kalidasa's Abhijnanashakuntalam" at the International Research Symposium on
Indian Knowledge Tradition and Mahakavi Kalidasa, jointly organized by the Department of Sanskrit,
University of Delhi, and the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), New Delhi, on December 17-18,
2025.
His paper examined the nuanced use of Prakrit dialects such as Shauraseni, Magadhi, and Maharashtri in
Kalidasa's celebrated play, highlighting how linguistic diversity enriches characterization and dramatic
expression. Drawing upon Hemacandra's Siddha-Hema-Shabdanushasana, the study offered fresh insights into the
cultural and aesthetic purposes behind dialectal variation in classical Sanskrit drama.
Mr. Mishra's presentation was well received, adding depth to the exploration of Indian knowledge
traditions and the literary genius of Kalidasa.
