UCLA ESTABLISHES FIRST ENDOWED CHAIR IN JAIN STUDIES
The University of California, Los Angeles, has announced the creation of the Bhagawan Abhinandan Endowed Chair for
Jain Studies and Religions of South Asia. The chair was made possible by a generous USD 1.5 million pledge from
Drs. Jasvant and Meera Modi, with an additional USD 500,000 contribution from the Jain community. This marks the
first endowed professorship in this field at UCLA.
The chair will support research, teaching, and public engagement through UCLA’s Study of Religion program, housed
in the division of Humanities.
On the occasion of the inauguration, Dean Alexandra Minna Stern emphasized the significance of expanding
scholarship in this underrepresented area, while Prof. Carol Bakhos noted the milestone’s impact on understanding
Jainism as a lived tradition.
Dr. Jasvant Modi highlighted Jain principles as vital tools for fostering peaceful dialogue in today’s polarized
world, adding: “By raising awareness of these traditions in academia, we empower future generations to shape a
better world.”
