At the age of 42, Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, achieved
omniscience by eliminating four obscuring karmas. For the subsequent
30 years, he delivered sermons of spiritual beneficence to his devoted
followers. Ultimately, he eradicated the remaining four non-obscuring
karmas and attained nirvana at the dawn of Kartik Krishna Amavasya.
He was born a human and attained liberation in the same lifetime. This
reaffirmed several core Jain principles: ahimsa in conduct, anekanta in
thought, syadvad in speech, and aparigraha in lifestyle.
Jains celebrate this day as Veer Nirvana Mahotsava, as well as
attainment of omniscience by His principal disciple Gautam Swami
(representing the ultimate wealth of eternal Bliss and complete
knowledge) and the very next day marks the commencement of the
ancient, Veer Nirvana Samvat based calendar system recognized as
the oldest one in the world.
The International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS’ extends its best
wishes for a joyful Veer Nirvana Mahotsava and a spiritually enriching
New Year!
