FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Dear Reader,

Jai Jinendra!

May 10, 2024, was celebrated as Akshaya Tritiya (also known as Akha Teej). On this auspicious day, Lord Rishabhdeva, the first Tirthankara, accepted sugarcane juice as his first meal after becoming a monk. During his initial years as a monk, he observed fasting for the first six months and then returned from the town to the jungles every day for another six months as there was no established method for offering food. This indicates that Jain monks adhere to strict rules in their discipline. This historical event underscores the unwavering commitment of Jain monks to their strict disciplinary rules.

There is another significant reason to celebrate this day. 190 years ago, the Jain poet Daulatram composed a renowned treatise Chhahdhala on this very day. This concise text, spanning 96 verses across six chapters, delves into the fundamental principles of Jain philosophy.

The International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS’ celebrates the milestones in the Jain tradition. With the summer program around the corner and the Prakrit program in its final stage, ISJS looks forward to accomplishing many more achievements in the future.
