The participants of the International Summer School for Jain Studies 2024 are enjoying their time at Navalveerayatan, ISJS training center, Pune. The 5-week program started on June 17, 2024.
The group has studied topics like the concept of the soul, karma theory, theory of knowledge, Jain ethics, anekantavada, samyakdarshan, Jain cosmology, etc. After visiting Shri Mahavir Jain Vidyalaya near ISJS premises in Pune, they also interacted with a Jain householder family last week where they observed the practicing Jains leading their lives according to the Jain way of life.
The group plans to visit nearby Jain temples, interact with Jain ascetics, have an excursion to Kumbhoj Bahubali near Kolhapur for an experiential journey, and trip to some local institutes in Pune.
Prof. Herbert Moyo, Professor of Theology and Religious Praxis, UKZN-RSA says about the program ~ “I’m halfway through the 2024 Jain Summer School program, it already feels like semester-long learning from the passionate Jainology lecturers. The campus lifestyle of lecturers exemplifies Jainology praxis giving hope for a world hinged on ahimsa and happiness. The ISJS is the right place to be introduced to Jainology. I’m already doing research on the praxis of Ahimsa in Africa.”
Prof. Edith Kayeli Chamwama, Religious Studies Lecturer, University of Nairobi conveys her ideas ~ “My highlight was the visit to the Jain family in Pune, to witness and hear from a family living the life, and to get testimonies from three generations. Their deep spirituality was evident in their interaction as a family, interaction with us, and the ease with which they spoke of life as Jains. I am looking forward to meeting the nuns and monks from the two major divisions of Jainism – Svetambara and Digambara and learning about their charisms.”
The International Summer School for Jain Studies ‘ISSJS’ is the pilot project of ISJS which completes 19 years in 2024.
