The Government of India has awarded the renowned Jain scholar Dr. Rajaram Jain with the prestigious Padma Shri award. The recognition is given in the field of literature and education and was conferred on January 26, 2024, during the Republic Day ceremony in Delhi.
Born on February 1, 1929, in Malthon, a small town in India, the 95-year-old scholar of Jainism has worked for the promotion of ancient Indian literature and created an interface by deciphering, editing, and publishing Prakrit, Apabhramsha, and Pali language manuscripts. Other than 16 volumes of the works of the Apabhramsa poet Raidhu, his prestigious works include Joni Pahuda, Risahputra Bharat-Bahubali-Chariu, Siri Sirival Chariu, Ritthanemi Chariu, etc. He has also written various books like Prakrit Bhasha Evam Shraman Sanskriti Ki Vyapakta, Jain Literature - The Incredible Treasure of Ancient Knowledge and Science, A Short History of Shauraseni Prakrit Language and Literature, and many others.
Dr. Jain has also received the Colette Caillat Foundation Award from the Institute De France, Paris in 2018, Man of the Year by the A.B. Institute, USA in 2004, the President Award in the field of Indology from the Government of India in 2000, Jain Itihas Ratna from the Government of India in 1974, and many more. Dr. Jain is a product of Syadvad Vidyalaya and Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Associated with various institutes and organizations, he is an executive board member of the University Grants Commission since 2010 and is an associate member of the University of London since 2018. He has been the director of Shri Kundkund Bharati Prakrit Shodh Sansthan, Delhi for 10 years till 2005, and the president of Nagari Pracharini Sabha, Ara till 2003.
