Jainism is a way of life and in India, the Jains freely exercise their rights and duties to practice their faith and religion in alignment with the Constitution of India which was enforced in 1950. The team instrumental in the composition of the constitution also included some Jains who were committed to the national sentiment and were playing vital roles in the building of the new nation.
Balwant Singh Mehta, Kusumkant Jain, Ratanlal Malviya, Ajit Prasad Jain, and Bhavani Arjun Khimji were the members of the team. They were also involved in the freedom struggle and made significant contributions to the social and national development of India. Efforts of Jains are equally valued in crafting a constitution that benefits everyone, not any one community. On page 63 of the constitution, there is the image of the 24th Tirthankara Lord Mahavir in a meditative posture that mentions Jainism as another stream of spiritual renaissance in its caption.
The International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS’ upholds Jain principles and organizes various programs to encourage studies and research in the field of Jainism. ISJS began with summer programs and has expanded into several different Jain and Prakrit programs. And the journey has just begun!
