According to Jain scriptures, Ram is one of the sixty-three Shalakapurush or illustrious persons. Being one of the nine Balbhadras, Ram had a strong bond with Lakshman, a Narayana, just as every other Balbhadra has with his brother. Conversely, Ravana was the Pratinarayana, king of three kingdoms, and referred to as half-chakravarti. As per the Jain narrative, a Pratinarayana has to be killed by Narayana, and hence Ravana was killed by Lakshman, and not Ram. Out of the various battles he fought, the most difficult battle for Ram was to hear the news of Lakshman’s death. After carrying his corpse for six months in disbelief, he renounced the world and attained liberation. Interestingly, both Lakshman and Ravana will attain liberation in their future births.
To bring to light the various aspects of Jain studies, the International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS’ seeks numerous ways to disseminate Jain principles and ideas around the world. After the successful completion of its sixth winter program, this year’s summer programs on Jainism are already announced. The upcoming edition of the digital journal ‘ISJS-Transactions’ will also be available soon to the readers.
ISJS is proud to increase the feathers in its cap as the collaboration with the University of Nairobi opens new doors for Jain studies and research. Well, the sky is the limit.
