Online Monthly Lecture on Ahimsa by Philip Wollen concluded
The 13th lecture in the online monthly lecture series by ISJS titled AHIMSA: The Swiss Army Knife of Civilization and the Third Illumination was delivered by Mr. Philip Wollen on February 24, 2024, at 10:00 AM (IST).
Mr. Wollen is an Australian philanthropist. He practices ahimsa and veganism and has spoken on multiple platforms presenting his views on animal rights, human health, the environment, and corporate ethics. Founder of The Winsome Constance Kindness Trust (WCKT), Mr. Wollen works tirelessly to help those in need and sponsors over 200 nonprofit organizations around the world.
The lecture was attended by a very large audience, including several significant personalities from the academic and social community in India, USA and Europe. Dr. Abhay Firodia, Chairman-ISJS, gave an overview of the experience center of Jainism that he is coming up in Pune soon. Dr. Shrinetra Pandey presented the welcome speech and Dr. Shugan C. Jain delivered the vote of thanks to the speaker, the chair, and everyone present in the session.
The lecture focused on ahimsa as a global movement and the need of the hour. Mr. Wollen gave numerous examples from English literature in favour of compassion and spoke against animal cruelty. He led by his own example of becoming a vegetarian and inspiring a number of people to do so. He also shared how the Jain theory of nonviolence inspires and encourages him to advocate ‘Ahimsan movement’.
The session was chaired by Padma Bhushan Shri D.R. Mehta, who is the former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Mr. Mehta is the founder and chief patron of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti ‘BMVSS’ which is the world’s largest organization for the handicapped. Among many other prestigious awards, he is a recipient of one of India’s highest civilian awards, Padma Bhushan, for his contributions to the world-renowned Jaipur Foot. He was also given the TECH Museum Innovation Award in Silicon Valley in the USA for innovation and its use for humanity.
The lecture was a special edition to commemorate the 2550 years of Bhagwan Mahavir Nirvana. ISJS encourages worldwide celebrations on the occasion and urges everyone to organize academic events about Bhagwan Mahavir throughout the year.
