Sangha Sthavira Gacchadhipati Shri Daulatsagar ji Maharaj
The scholarly world mourns the passing of Shri Sangh Sthavir Gachchadhipati Acharya Daulatsagar Surishwarji Maharaj, a luminary whose spiritual journey transcended mere mortal existence. On February 18, 2024, in Pune, this venerable sage attained samadhi at the remarkable age of 103.
Born as Shankar into a humble Patel family in 1921, Acharya Daulatsagar's destiny unfolded when, at the tender age of 14, he encountered the sacred Navkar Mantra. This pivotal moment ignited a flame within him, leading to his renunciation of worldly ties at 19. Despite possessing only rudimentary knowledge of the scriptures, he embarked on an extraordinary feat: committing the entire Jain canon to memory. His intellectual prowess and unwavering dedication set him apart.
As the revered Gachhadhipati of the Sagar community, Acharya Daulatsagar radiated wisdom and compassion. Under his benevolent guidance, over 900 Jain monks and nuns found solace and enlightenment. His legacy echoes through their lives, a testament to his profound impact.
Acharya Daulatsagar's unwavering commitment to asceticism spanned an astounding 84 years—a record unmatched in contemporary times. He stands as the third Gacchadhipati to achieve the rare milestone of a century of existence, following in the footsteps of revered predecessors, Acharya Siddhisuriji and Acharya Bhadrasuriji.
During his Chaturmaas sojourn in his birthplace, Jetpur, where Jain families were scarce, Acharya Daulatsagar's influence extended beyond religious boundaries. His teachings resonated with local communities, allowing them to embrace the tenets of Jainism. His impact was not confined to the cloisters; it rippled through the fabric of society.
The departure of Acharya Daulatsagar Surishwarji Maharaj leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of the Jain community and the wider world. Yet, his teachings remain etched in the collective consciousness, inspiring generations to seek truth, compassion, and enlightenment.
As the International School for Jain Studies (ISJS) bids farewell to this great luminary with heartfelt sorrow and deep reverence, we hold the fervent hope that his soul attains nirvana—a final liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
