Jainism is a practicing religion and monks are the spiritual leaders and guides of the Jain community, who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and self-realization and upholding non-violence and compassion. They have made significant contributions to the Indian culture and society, in the fields of philosophy, literature, art, science, and social reform. They have also produced masterpieces of poetry, drama, grammar, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine.
Jain monks renounce worldly pleasures and comforts and follow a strict code of conduct, such as walking barefoot, eating only alms, and avoiding modern technology. They inspire many people to adopt a simple and ethical lifestyle and to limit their desires and needs.
Monks are living examples of the Jain ideals and values, and the source of inspiration and guidance for the Jain community and beyond. They are the torchbearers of a noble and ancient tradition that continues to thrive and flourish in the modern world.
The Jain community lost two of its most influential monks recently. Acharya Shiromani 108 Vidyasagar ji and Sangh Sthavira Gacchadhipati Daulatsagar Surishvar ji attained samadhi and left for the heavenly abode the same day on February 18, 2024, leaving the devotees from both the traditions mourning and bereaved. Their unwavering conduct as well as their contribution to the upliftment of the society and preservation of the Jain culture is unparalleled.
International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS’ pays tribute to both the Venerable acharyas and wishes them to attain nirvana soon.
