Brahmi Workshop at Bhagwan Mahavir Prakrit Fellowship Program 2023-24

The participants of the Bhagwan Mahavir Prakrit Fellowship program 2023-24 got a chance to study Brahmi – the ancient Indian script – for two weeks.

Dr. Mukesh Mehta, Research Associate, ISJS taught them the antiquity and relevance of Brahmi which was well received by the participants. The workshop included the Brahmi alphabet, adding vowel symbols on the letters, conjuncts, and numerals.

The workshop enabled them to read and decipher the Prakrit and Jain inscriptions written in Brahmi script. By the end of the workshop, the participants were able to read and understand the Hathigumpha inscription of Kharavela on their own. They are now equipped to transliterate Brahmi inscriptions into Roman and Devnagari scripts and vice versa.
