SAD DEMISE OF PROF. LAWRENCE A BABB
Prof. Lawrence Alan Babb, the famous scholar of Jainism has passed away at the age of 82 on November 21, 2023. He was suffering from pneumonia. Prof. Babb was Willem Schupf Professor of Asian Languages and Civilizations and Professor of Anthropology, Emeritus at Amherst College, Massachusetts, USA.
Prof. Babb’s seminal works in South-Asian studies during the 1980s and 1990s provided a wide scope for studies in Jainism. His famous book Absent Lord: Ascetics and Kings in a Jain Ritual Culture (1996) is a landmark in the modern history of Jain studies. His recent publication was Religion in India: Past and Present (2020) with a historical perspective tracing India’s religious evolution from the Indus Valley period to the present.
He inspired many young scholars to study Jainism while teaching various courses like Indian Civilization and Anthropology of Religion.
