ISJS is pleased to announce the 2
nd Bhagwan Mahavira Fellowship to learn Prakrit for nine months in India begins from September 01, 2021 at Pune, India. Following three candidates are enrolled for this program:
- Mr. Anthony James Ruda from USA
Graduated from Columbia University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, with a focus on Mathematical Physics. Later he became acquainted with Prof. Kanti Mardia, the renowned statistician and Jain scholar who became his mentor for Jain studies. Anthony is co-writing a paper with him on “Some Aspects of Jain Logic and Statistical Thinking”, which he presented at the virtual International Symposium on Jainism & Mathematics. Following the fellowship, he may pursue formal study in a post-graduate program centered on Jainism, perhaps at the University of Edinburgh under Paul Dundas.
- Mrs. Trisha Jha from India
Post-graduated from Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Currently enrolled in Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) Program in Ancient History under the supervision of Prof. R. Mahalakshmi. Title of her MPhil thesis is ‘Prognostication as Knowledge: A Contextual Analysis of the Jain Angavijja (c. 1st Century BCE – 6th Century CE)’. She intends to use the learning from her fellowship in for her present research and future commitment to the study of historical factors through Jain Prakrit literature.
- Ms. Pragya Jain from ISJS, India
Research Associate at ISJS. She has completed double masters in English Literature, and Jainology and Comparative Studies. She also holds MPhil with the specialization in Aestheticism and possesses a five-year certificate course “Siddhant Visharad” in Jainism. She has worked as a lecturer of Communication Skills, Journalism, Creative Writing, and other mass media subjects at various colleges in Mumbai and has worked as a correspondent and a sub-editor in reputed English dailies. Currently, she is also a research scholar pursuing her PhD from the department of Jainology and Prakrit at Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur.
The fellowship provides full boarding, lodging, monthly stipend (for personal expenses), tuition, course material and travel within India in connection with the program. The selected scholars will only bear their own airfare to and from India, the passport, insurance, and visa fee, etc.
The program begins from September 01, 2021 at Pune, India and will end on May 31, 2022. During this tenure, participants will learn Prakrit at ISJS Pune, Shantineketan (West Bengal) and Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. Prof. Ashok Kumar Singh, Prof. Jagat Ram Bhattacharya and Prof. Dinanath Sharma will teach them at these places respectively.
