2ND WINTER PROGRAM ON JAIN STUDIES IN PROGRESS AT AHMEDABAD

2nd Winter Program on Jain Studies by International School for Jain Studies (ISJS) is in progress at Preksha Dhyan Academy, Koba. The program begins on 28 December, 2019. There are twenty three participants (Undergraduate students, graduate students, PhD candidates, Professors, and faculty members) from USA, Italy, Zimbabwe, China, Ethiopia and India. Some participants are renowned scholars of their fields such as Dr. Karma Lekhe Tomso is a renowned Buddhist scholar and nun. She is a professor at the University of San Diego, where she teaches Buddhism and World Religions. Dr. Kenneth R. Valpey is a professor at Bhaktivedanta College where the central program of study is in Vaishnava Theology. He is also a member of the ISKCON. So far the participants studied basics of Jainism such as introduction to Jainism, the place of Jainism in Indian Philosophy, Antiquity of Jainism, Metaphysics, Fundamental Values, Puja and Rituals. On 31 December, 2019 the participants visited Sabarmati Ashram and nearby Jain temples. The program will continue till 7 January, 2020 and it will covers the daily practices, householder conduct, origin and development of Prakrit language, Jain Yoga, Epistemology, Karma Doctrine, Bio Ethics, Sallekhana and their relevance to modern society. During this period the participants will have 1 day visit to Palitana.

ADMISSION OPEN FOR 2020 SUMMER PROGRAMS IN INDIA

Through following programs ISJS offers an excellent proposal for overseas university students, staff and researchers as well as High school teachers to visit India in summer 2020 and learn the doctrine of Ahimsa (nonviolence) and Jainism to enhance ether overall wellness and knowledge.

ISSJS.2020-4W (26 June - 24 July, 2020): This four week program is designed to cater to the needs of undergraduate, graduate, degree holders, PhD Candidates, Professors and faculty in Religion, Philosophy, South Asian Studies and Anthropology and other related subjects (history, art, music, public health, bio-ethics, education, management etc.) who desire to learn about Jainism as a part of their higher education. ISSJS.2020-6W (26 June - 06 August, 2020): This six week advanced program is designed for serious and motivated Graduate and PhD students, Post-Doctoral scholars and full time teaching cum research faculty involved in religion, South Asian religions or studies and languages, anthropology, theology and allied subjects. DR. K. C. JAIN MEMORIAL LECTURE BY PROF. MICHAEL TOBIAS & MRS. JANE MORRISON

International School for Jain Studies (ISJS) organized a lecture on “Some of the most critical aspects of Jain tradition, practice & idealism that are critical to the future of life on Earth” under Dr. K. C. Jain Memorial Lecture on 15 December 2019 at India International Centre. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Michael Charles Tobias and Mrs. Jane Gray Morrison. Prof. Tobias, is a renowned ecologist and environmentalist, and has been a professor at numerous universities. He has authored nearly 50 books and currently is the president of the Dancing Star Foundation and his wife Mrs. Morrison is an author, ecologist and a filmmaker. The lecture was attended by more than 80 academic scholars and members from Jain society. After the deliverance of lecture by the speakers the session ends with question answer and discussions. RETURN OF ISJS ALUMNI TO LEARN PRAKRIT

Mr. Andrew Bridges from Bhagwan Shantinath Lectureship in Jain Studies, California State University, USA has come back to India to enhance his knowledge about Prakrit, the language of Jain canon with ISJS. He started is classes on 24 December for 1 month. He has already attended 6-week, UTTI, Prakrit programs in past years.

ONE YEAR PRAKRIT RESEARCH AND STUDY PROGRAM

Under Bhagwan Mahavira Prakrit Research and Study Program organized by International School for Jain Studies (ISJS) for one year, three scholars namely Mr. Itamar Ramot, PhD candidate (University of Chicago, USA), Ms. Corinne Smith, MA (SOAS, London) and Mr. Anando Ghosh, MA (SOAS, London) started their study in September, 2019. In the first stage they have spent time in Delhi (Ms. Corinne and Mr. Anando) and Pune (Mr. Itamar) for the introductory lectures. Since 8 October, 2019 they are in Shantiniketan under the guidance of Prof. J.R. Bhattacharyya, the renowned scholar of Prakrit language. They will be there till May, 2020. After that they will proceed to Udaipur for their further studies and research with Prof. Premsuman Jain.

10TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PEACE AND NONVIOLENT ACTION

Anuvrat Global Organization (Anuvibha) in academic association with The Centre for Global Nonkilling, Honolulu, USA & International Institute of Peace Studies and Global Philosophy, UK, France is organising its 10th International Conference on Peace and Nonviolent Action on 17 – 20 December, 2019 at Terapanth Bhavan, Adhyatma Sadhana Kendra, Chhatarpur, Delhi. Theme of the seminar is “Educating and Training Children and Youths in Nonviolence: An Imperative for the Creation of Nonkilling Societies and a Sustainable Future.” In this conference Dr. Shugan Jain, Chairman of ISJS presented and introduced ISJS. As well Dr. Larysa Karachevtseva from Ukraine (alumni of 6 week and Winter program), presented her paper on nonviolent studies.
